A 14-year-old Brooklyn hit-run victim who was struck in a harrowing caught-on-tape crash says she is stunned that the driver left her to fend for herself while she was reeling in pain.
“When she went away, I was like, ‘Oh, no, you cannot do that. You need to stay and check [on] me,’ ” Xin Yi Wang of Sunset Park said Sunday. “She just ran away.”
Wang was walking home from school near 47th Street and Ninth Avenue on March 27 when a woman in a Dodge Challenger plowed into her while she was crossing the street, she said.
Wang, who attends the High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies in Manhattan, was tossed into an intersection just a few blocks from her home.
At first, the driver appeared to be helpful, asking, “Are you OK? Do you need me to take you to the hospital? Or bring you home?” Wang said.
But the teenager was uncomfortable going anywhere with the stranger, so she declined a ride to the hospital.
Meanwhile, other drivers were demanding that the driver move her car out of the way so their vehicles could pass. The hit-and-run driver did one loop around the block — then simply never came back, according to Wang.
Good Samaritans then rushed to the teen’s side and called 911.
“I never thought this would happen in real life,” she said. “I’m thankful for those people that called 911 and they didn’t just leave me. I was scared.”
She was taken to Maimonides Hospital in an ambulance — and miraculously suffered no broken bones or other serious injuries. She was discharged that night with bruises on her hip, and is still suffering from some minor aches and pains.
“I feel lucky that I didn’t get hit in the head or have any broken bones,” Wang said.
On Sunday, her dad, Dad Li Su Wang, fumed, “When you hit a person. You need to take full responsibility and not just walk away because that is very bad.”
Cops are hunting for the driver, who is described as a 35- to 40-year-old woman with a medium to heavy build.
The NYPD asks anyone with information to call the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
